Across Recognition Express, we get involved in all sorts of charity fundraising over the year. Two big efforts from the past few months are from Nathan in our Thames Valley team, and Laura Mayfield in our head office marketing team

Nathan

Nathan took on the Great North Run in September to raise funds for Asthma & Lung UK.

The Great North Run is now the largest half marathon event in the world, and takes place in early September each year, between Newcastle upon Tyne and South Shields. The event was first created back in 1981, by everyone’s favourite running commentator, and former Olympian, Brendan Foster.

Nathan completed his half marathon in an impressive 2 hours and 5 minutes, raising £531.25 (inc. Gift Aid) for Asthma & Lung UK.

Nathan had this to say:

“I have lived with Asthma for most of my life which is why I chose the charity for the Great North Run; I also ran for them in last years London Marathon.

My wife travelled up North with me to cheer me on in the wind and rain!

I finished in 2hrs 5 minutes which wasn’t too bad for an old boy like me.”

Absolutely great effort from Nathan, we think he’s a bit of a superhero!

Laura

On August 11th, Laura completed a marathon swim in the Thames. The Henley Thames Marathon Swim is an open water swim marathon from Henley to Marlow. It covers 13km (8 miles), which is the equivalent effort of running a 26.2-mile (42.16km) marathon. A 13km swim is the equivalent of 520 lengths of a 25meter swimming pool.

Laura did the swim to raise money for Pancreatic Cancer UK, in memory of her dad. And completed it in an amazing 4 hours and 37 minutes.

She had this to say:

“The swim marathon was an amazing event. I was nervous beforehand because the furthest I had swum in one go during training was 6km.

The swim was broken down into 4 stages and we had to get out of the water after each stage because of the locks on the route. The first stage was 4km, second was 5km, third was 1.5km, and the final stretch was 2.5km.

Once I had the first 2 sections in the bag, I knew there was no chance I wouldn’t complete the event.

My favourite stages were actually the first two. The first, because I was excited to get started and because I reached the locks and the feed station much quicker than I expected to. And the second because it was an amazing stretch of the Thames, lined with woodland, huge houses and very few boats – not that I got much of a glimpse because I was face down doing front crawl.

It was an incredible event, and I loved pretty much every stroke of it.

I was also blown away with how much money I raised for Pancreatic Cancer UK.”

A massive well done to Laura – swimming a marathon in the Thames certainly isn’t everyone’s idea of a fun day out. She raised an impressive £1,381.25 (inc. Gift Aid) for Pancreatic Cancer UK.

Amazing effort, well done to Nathan and Laura!
